I just had a terrific cup of coffee that I made in my own kitchen.

No, this doesn't sound like a big deal.

But, for the past year or so, I have not been making coffee at home at ALL.

No need to on weekdays. I get my coffee at work, for free.

And, on weekends, it seemed like a giant hassle when I was the only coffee drinker. So I made myself get up and go out for my coffee.

Not having coffee was not an option, as I discovered. Withdrawal headaches, lassitude, and general brainlessness.

At the old place, there were several purveyors of caffeine within walking distance.

Here, not so much. Or, anyway, a longer walk, and not one I was eager to undertake in pursuit of coffee.

I was absolutely resisting buying an electric coffee maker, though. I'm the only regular coffee drinker in the house -- I let [livejournal.com profile] melovechocolate have decaf froofy coffee drinks, but she clearly only likes them for the caramel and whipped cream, a cup of regular coffee is not what she wants. And while there are single-cup electric brewers, it seemed awfully wasteful of resources and counter space to have a whole appliance for that one cup of coffee two days a week.

French press, you say? Nope. I don't like the coffee that they make. Too chewy.

What I wanted was a single-cup Melitta cup-top filter holder. I could have sworn that they carried them at Bed Bath & Beyond, but nope. Not at Target, either.

Grr. I went ahead and ordered online. Two, so if a coffee drinker were to visit, there wouldn't be any waiting. Red, to go with my new kitchen - a theme developed when we bought a red microwave. They came with sample packs of filters, too.

So. Cup-top filter, shiny red teakettle on the stove, coffee grinder unearthed yesterday when I unpacked the kitchen -- [livejournal.com profile] shadowflyer? are you lacking a coffee grinder? did we used to have two? If you need one, I'll give you the black one, and use the red one I bought at Target, otherwise I'm returning the new one.

Green Mountain fair trade organic breakfast blend, bought on last grocery run.

Verdict: tasty enough to drink black.

Excellent!! :D

We do like French-press coffee, but there's something so nice about having coffee *your way* in your own kitchen. Nice to see you settling in to the new place, too :)

**hugs**

[livejournal.com profile] ame_chan was the one who turned me on to those.

Lurve mine!

I got one of these for my birthday last year, it's perfect since I'm the only coffee drinker around here and I like a nice dark roast. I like the frou frou coffee as well so I have a bunch of the flavor syrups I can play with.

Nothing beats a good cup of coffee.

That sounds like it works great for you. Me, I *hate* dark roasts -- I like a coffee with bright acidity, ideally a Kenya AA but I've never found that fair trade or organic, at no darker than a Full City roast and preferably a notch lighter. Dark roasts taste oily and burnt to me, most of the time.

And I wanted a solution that didn't plug in, too.

Mmm, coffee.

Most of the available organic coffees around here are from Central and South America, and have the bright acidity that you're looking for. It should be possible to get them at a light or medium roast (but there's that word "should" again).

I like dark roasts, but I prefer full-body to bright acidity anyway.

Oh, and as I alluded yesterday, I'm going to try going cold turkey today and tomorrow. I'll let you know whether the weather is right for tamping down the tolerance, or whether the headache would just be crippling.

I hope it goes well for you. I keep my intake to that one travel mug full on weekdays, and the one household mug on weekends, and that keeps me fairly well balanced... I just can't let the intake creep up firther, or i get like you were describing. I recognized that speech pattern from ME!

The Green Mountain Breakfast Blend said "bright, vibrant and resounding with sweet, ripe fruit notes," and "a blend of medium and light roasts," so I went with it.

Yummy.

I despise Starbuck's coffee, as you know...but when by mistake I got Bay Blend from Trader Joe's the dark, oily bean produced a decent cup of coffee brewed at the proper temperature. Full bodied, sure, maybe a little on the chewy side, but not the tongue-sanding horror that is *$. Just confirms my suspicions that their high-falutin' pricey coffee makers are Not Worth It.

Mmmmm.

I share your difficulty - only one of me in the house drinking coffee. But keep not one but two coffeemakers on hand. I do use a coffeemaker when my parents come into town, which happens at least twice a year.

Since my rule of thumb is that any device that gets used at least twice a year gets kept, I continue to allocate cupboard space for it.

The toaster we got as a wedding gift, on the other hand, will be leaving our kitchen soon. The bread I like doesn't fit in it, so I continue to make my toast with the gimpy toaster oven that Granddaddy bought back in 1985.

You should see all the kitchen stuff I Freecycled earlier! Made a fellow lister ask if I was giving up cooking at home, and I assured her that this was just the overflow.

I've been grinding my beans at the store, so I haven't especially missed it. On the other hand, you might consider it useful to have a coffee grinder and a grinder that's never touched coffee for nuts and the like....

As for [livejournal.com profile] melovechocolate, she's developed a liking for iced coffee as well - though that does involve a hit of caramel flavoring. :-P

I have a mortar and pestle for spice-grinding and a stick blender with mini processor cup that I could use on nuts if I have to. I don't need yet another gadget taking up space here, or to spend the $20. And I can deal with the functioning one being black instead of red. :-/

I even found the little scoop that measures whole beans so that you get the right amount of grounds when you're done. Two scoops = one mugful, perfect strength.

I was sort of thinking of iced coffee when I mentioned froofy coffee drinks. Decaf iced caramel latte with whipped cream is what she asks for, and as long as it's decaf, I say okay. But I also say that that isn't coffee. It's a milkshake.

I've been making regular coffee - about a travel mug and a half worth fits in the Donald Duck mug, brewed to two travel mugs' strength - with cream and sugar and a hit of caramel syrup over ice. She has probably half a regular cup while she holds it for me in the car in the morning.

I have a Coffee Caddy from REI that I adore. I don't use it too often right now, but there was a time that I used it daily in the office. Makes it so, so easy to make fresh-brewed coffee for one.
