Important discovery: it is possible to divert an online discussion of gun control from getting acrimonious, even among people who have widely-diverging and strongly-held opinions on the subject, by contrasting "gun appropriate for dealing with violent stalker" and "gun appropriate for dealing with zombie uprising." Everyone will become supremely interested in optimizing their chances for zombie survival, and boring but divisive questions like waiting periods and background checks will be cheerfully ignored.

+1 million for starting the zombies! That's been the nicest gun control debate I've ever seen.

I didn't even MEAN to divert the thread! I was just thinking that the two situations in which I could really see myself wanting a gun would be "terrifying stalker" or "zombie attack," and, well, high-capacity semi-auto is really far more suited to the latter than the former.

The result that the thread was diverted was a happy accident!

Zombies are way more entertaining than personal political agendas.

It been amusing. I think the greatest value has been that those who are most adamant about the virtues of "Gun Magic" can see those who disagree showing an interest in using them.

That it (for some of those people) pure fantasy, and they have zero real interest is less than relevant. They get to see people being, "positive" about guns, and that mellows their reactions to the other aspects of the conversation.

The only way humanity will ever unite is against a common enemy.
