Apparently the child is less embarrassed writing about lesbians than gay boys. And it's no more explicit than the Ken Follett spy novels I was reading at the same age.

I would have to agree with Shadowflyer, except that all I've read of the book was it's Amazon blurb (and I've heard of it before). And that I did The Stand for an 8th grade book report....

I may have to add Tipping The Velvet to my list to read, though.
