It's freezing both Firefox and Safari on my Mac. This is very inconvenient.

Until it's sorted, please redirect email to rikibeth at hotmail dot com. [livejournal.com profile] trowa_barton, please re-send your last e-mail there -- I can log in and see your new message in the inbox, and then my browser locks up.

I will also be checking my lj inbox, of course, and you can leave comments here.

I've seen & heard that quite a few people have been having gmail issues. It's very strange, mine's been fine. Gmail's usually pretty solid...

Maybe it doesn't play nicely with the latest Firefox or something.

I have the latest Firefox, and I've been having no trouble.

But (and I apologize for the "Is it plugged in?" question), have you tried backing off to "simple HTML" instead of "full-featured gmail"?

How do I do that before logging in? I wanted to try that, but it doesn't seem possible to do it without logging into Gmail, and as soon as my inbox appears, so does the Spinning Rainbow Wheel of Death.

Hmm. I run GMail under Prism, and rarely have trouble. So I just tested it under Firefox, and also had no problems that I noticed. So I'm not sure what to suggest, either as a cause or as a possible remedy or workaround.

The other advice, to use the 'Basic HTML' version, is the the usual, but as you say, it's no good if you can't gain any access at all. Usually, you get as far as the login page, or at least part of it, and it will offer the Basic option there. It's also one of the many links from the normal working page once you're already in. But it sounds like you're not getting to anything at all.

I'm not sure how it works with Macs. Under Ubuntu, I authorise all modifications to all programs. And though I could do it, I reserve updates to those that have been vetted and approved by Ubuntu (to make sure they work with the current OS build). If your FF updates silently, it may have added a modification that's not friendly to GMail.

But this wouldn't explain why it's also not working under Safari. It seems more likely that either: 1) Google updated something silently, that's now unfriendly to your system,; or 2) Apple updated something silently, that's now unfriendly to Google (or specifically GMail).

I don't want to get too deep into this, because I'm fairly ignorant about Macs, but what I can find suggests that GMail can be smoothly integrated with OS X Mail (). So you could try that, as a workaround to browser options, and see if you're still having problems. A desktop app called Mailplane (http://mailplaneapp.com/) claims to do the same thing.

Before I forget, I have to ask: Have you restarted FF? I only ask because many people (including me) will let it run for days on end sometimes. FF has problems for some reason when it has updated. I have to load it fully, then shut it down, wait a minute, then restart it, after every update, before it works properly. This has apparently worked for some people. But again, it doesn't explain any Safari issues.

A message from me should be in your lj inbox. I don't know whether you received it.
