The Bloody Mary mix at work is made with, among other things, a generous amount of fresh horseradish root.

They were mixing up a batch of it yesterday as I was heading out. It smelled FANTASTIC.

I asked Derek today if Mary mix counted as "juice" -- staff's allowed unlimited coffee, fountain drinks, and juice, but not the alcohol. I told him I didn't want to take it if it wasn't allowed. He said it was fine. So I poured myself a moderate cupful, and had it along with my morning coffee. It was DELICIOUS.

It was also, as I discovered, not a good thing to put into an empty stomach. The first thing I noticed was that it made me feel hungrier, whereas my coffee-with-cream usually pacifies me until I can grab a break.

The next thing I noticed, a couple of hours later, was rather more uncomfortable, and resulted in extra bathroom breaks. Eep!

I came home and poked Google, and, yes, horseradish can indeed do that.

I didn't want it to do that.

I'm eating plain rice for dinner tonight, I think. Maybe some toast. (Bananas and applesauce, while recommended for this condition, are too gross to contemplate. The smell of bananas gives me heaves, and applesauce is just ew. I like SOUR CREAM on my latkes, thanks.)

Bloody Mary mix: NOT a substitute for breakfast.

Tomato can do that too. The acid is a bladder irritant. (as is soy and citrus). Yeah, been there, done that.

I prefer sour cream on my latkes too.

This was not my bladder. /TMI

Also, tomato juice is my standard morning beverage in addition to coffee, and it doesn't give me problems. Nope, definitely the horseradish.

Russ sends his sympathies. He gets that from anything made with canola oil, which has resulted in some unpleasant surprises when a couple of our standard road-trip food breaks changed their cooking oil without notice. And it's turned both of us into ingredients readers on packaged foods, too.

Oh dear. Some people I know have the same response to soybean oil. Unfortunate!

I've had Bloody Marys full of delicious horseradish before with no problems, but it's always been in conjunction with a large brunch. The food must act as a buffer.

But isn't that the problem? *ducks*

Sorry to hear; it's always unfortunate when tastebuds and physiology don't agree.

whups, the anonymous comment was from me. Misplaced my logged in session, apparently.

Aw, I am an applesauce and latkes kinda girl, but I sympathize with the horseradish thing. Eeps.

Sour cream AND apple sauce with my latkes, thankyeverramuch.

And you're making me very grateful I inherited Dad's cast-iron stomach.

Maybe you need to start having the bloody mary mix for lunch, along with something more solid to buffer it. It would be a pity to miss out entirely!

I think if I EAT something for breakfast, instead of just having coffee and juice, I'll probably be safe, but I've got to figure out something that's quick and easy.

Mary mix isn't what I want to drink with burgers. If I haven't been making beer-battered anything (and therefore have no reserved beer) I'll generally grab a fountain Coke with a lemon wedge.

Heh. I don't know which of three possible do-thats you mean, but it doesn't matter; horseradish has had all three effects on me when taken on an empty stomach. Love it passionately but get some carbs in there first.

(Now I wish there were a way to filk "just a spoonful of horseradish makes the medicine go down", so I could skip away into the night singing that ... but, tragically, it won't scan.)

I thought that by mentioning that my condition was susceptible to treatment with the BRAT diet, I'd made it clear enough without being overly icky.

Because, trust me, it was ICKY.

Well, the three possible ickies were the α-icky, the β-icky, and the γ-icky. You had made a comment elsewhere that γ-icky was out, and the BRAT is good for either α- or β-icky. :)

If bananas were meant to be food the universe would have given them a different taste/smell. Period.

Tummy ok again?

Just fine, thanks!

I dreamed abut you last night! I dreamed I'd traveled all the way to Germany to see a concert where Ego Likeness was opening for Information Society and that Steve Archer (of Ego Likeness) had done a double-take when he saw me in the audience (because he knows he usually sees me at shows in the northeast US), and you were letting me stay overnight before I had to go home again. But then a lot of people came over to your apartment. It was strange.

That's really... not sounding much like me.
But still... I AM IN YOUR HEAD!! *evil laugh*

I know, it's not as if you ever post about people coming over to your apartment except maybe your parents, definitely not a LOT of people.

But you were in my head!

Sorry to hear about the digestive unpleasantness. I hope you're feeling better today.

Am strangely pleased to know that I'm not the only one who doesn't like bananas, but I would I'd found out under better circumstaces for you.

I am lucky in that the secondary effect of peppers/horseradish I don't suffer.

Coffee, by itself, is an appetite suppressent. The cream helps. Caffeine stimulates insulin.
