Jury duty

Well, THAT was a waste of time.

Sitting on my butt in an auditorium from 8:15 AM until 2:30 PM, when they decided to let everyone who hadn't been called yet go home.

With no cellphone, because cameraphones aren't allowed.

I spent the time reading Slammerkin, which I picked up at Borders on Sunday on impulse, because it was faced out and so I saw the title and thought of [livejournal.com profile] slammerkinbabe. who has always seemed like an interesting and clever person from her comments, and so I figured if she had liked it enough to make it part of her lj name, it was probably interesting, so I picked it up and read the blurb, and with phrases like "1748 in working-class London" and "life of prostitution" and "Clothes are the greatest lie ever told," it sounded like Just My Thing.

It was. Although I wasn't expecting the ending to turn out that way. Perhaps I should have, given that the author's Irish. Still. Recommended.

The reminder slip encouraged you to use "discretion" in choosing your clothes and to remember that "decorum" was expected in the courtroom. I put on an unassuming black sweater and jeans and a plain belt with no studs, but decided that kittyshoes were perfectly decorous. And that they could just deal with my button-encrusted leather jacket, because it was COLD this morning.

So now I'm home and I'm going to have a ton of catching up to do at work tomorrow. While standing all day on a broken toe. Which is still sore, although I'm not limping any more, at least.

[livejournal.com profile] slammerkinbabe is made of awesome and win. Also, she is hysterically funny.

Heh. The last pair at Hot Topic last year was my size, and $15 on clearance, so I win.

And my daughter doesn't even want to borrow them any more because she doesn't find them comfortable.

And they are not making my broken toe hurt.

Out of curiosity, how often are you supposed to be called for jury in CT?

You can be called once a year, but you don't have to serve more than once every three years.

Interesting. In MA, it's 3 years regardless (i.e. one day or one trial rule).

I was so thoroughly charmed with your kitty shoes that I ordered a pair from Zappo's within half an hour of reading your post, except the ones I got (they arrived 20 minutes ago) are on a black-and-white checked background instead of plain black. They are the cutest things I've seen in a long time -- if not the most comfortable. They fit well enough I'm keeping them regardless, but do they break in at all?

I don't wear mine often enough to get a sense for how they break in -- I do feel that they're fairly stiff leather, and using a leather conditioner might be a good idea if you want them to soften up.

For all their stiffness, they haven't rubbed any blisters on me, which is more than I can say for some canvas skimmers I've had, so I've been pretty satisfied.

And, yay, kittyshoes!

Hmm. A leather conditioner. I have heard these words but neverapplied them to my life. ;) I may try that. Thanks!
