errands, errands, errands
Jul. 2nd, 2007 09:08 pmToday was absolutely, totally insane. But very productive.
Up at dawn to get to work to make the muffins. Moment of panic when the Diana's Bakery order had muffins and scones on it; were they getting rid of me? Eric said "no, I think your muffins and scones are perfect, theirs couldn't be better!" Well, that was nice to hear. Turns out Chef thought this was my vacation week, not first week in August. I said no, but I was going to be working short hours because of moving. He said that was fine.
Home.
eternaleponine had called in sick today so she could get stuff done. She'd packed four boxes of books. I checked my e-mail and made phone calls, and we settled on a round of errands.
First we went over to the new place to meet with the landlord and get keys and a copy of the lease. That also let us unload the six tires from my car into the basement, so we had hauling space! Also, I reclaimed a computer desk that they were getting rid of, as it was in better shape than my current one.
Next, armed with a copy of the lease, we went over to Comcast, and set up our communications. Triple play package -- cable, internet, phone. Plus the extra $8/month so we could have MTV2, fuse, and Bravo. They can't hook it up until the 13th. I am SO leaving the DSL up here because life without internet? Tragic.
(Speaking of which, my lj friends page is still breaking Firefox. even with noscript installed. If there is anything you especially want me to see, link me in comments, please.)
Then there was a hardware store right near the Comcast office, so we went to get key copies made. Yay.
Next stop, Staples. Banker's boxes (because they RULE for moving), Sharpies, a tape gun, a USB cable that I needed, and a whiteboard/corkboard for our new kitchen.
Panera is right next to Staples so we had lunch.
Then to the lawyer to pick up my CHECK for the house. Wow.
Then to the bank to deposit that important piece of paper. Slightly crazy guy at the next teller admired the 1" band buttons on my purse, and then when we were in the parking lot came up to say how much he admired my bumper stickers, especially the Rock Against Bush one. He claimed to have started some Rock Against Vivisection thingy about animal rights. Um, yeah. Sure. Can I get out of the parking lot, please?
Back home. We decided that today was as good a day as any to look for a couch, so I printed out directions to Bob's Discount Furniture in Manchester. First, though, we stopped at the dollar store for bungee cords and rope, and stopped at the post office, to mail off cookbooks to my deserving friendslist, and to pick up change of address forms. Done. (
paper_crystals and
wikdsushi, check your e-mail for shipping costs.)
At Bob's, walked right in, were greeted by a salesdude, and when he asked if he could help us, we said ""Where's the Pit?" That being their scratch-and-dent, overstock, etc. area, with discounts. He pointed us to it.
We poked around a little bit. Most of the stuff was, predictably, ugly. Salesdude came up to us again and said "so, you're looking for living room sets?" I said, "No, we're looking for ONE sofa, preferably a sleeper." He said there weren't very many sleepers in the Pit, but showed us the one they did have. Brown, microsuede, not especially thrilling, but not ugly either, and it was pretty much what I'd budgeted to spend. We poked around for maybe ten more minutes, maximum, before deciding it'd do.
Paid for it (
eternaleponine's card and I'll pay her back when the house money clears). Explained to them that no, we did not have a truck, but we had a big Volvo station wagon and they could put it on the roof. They seemed doubtful, but we had confidence.
The warehouse guys were kind of funny. "You don't want us to put it with the legs down, do you? It'll scratch your paint." I told them, "This is a 1985 car. Take a look at it. Do you think I CARE?" "Gonna get a new car soon anyway?" "No, I just GOT this car."
Despite the fact that they're not supposed to do the tying for the customers, for liability reasons, they were nice and tied the knots anyway. The bungees were also made of win.
We were very punchy going home with it.
eternaleponine will probably post about how many times we said "because we have a sofa," or similar phrases.
We got home and shifted to her car to go get
melovechocolate from camp, because
shadowflyer had called me (while we were testing sofas) to explain that his brakes were near failure and could I get her and keep her overnight so he wouldn't have to drive her in a hazardous car? Normally he'd switch to Christy's, but Christy was out of town.
Okay. Sure. Just so long as I can drop her in New Britain tomorrow night so we can pack with her not underfoot on the 4th, okay? Yes. Copacetic.
Picked her up, dropped off the forms I hadn't filled out yet, came back to the house, discovered I couldn't raise the back seat in my wagon without opening the side doors, took two cars so
melovechocolate could see the new place, and, more importantly,
khemicalx could help us unload the sofa.
Sofa IS IN PLACE! YAY! Getting it through the door was kind of interesting, but it happened. We are clearly bringing all of
eternaleponine's furniture for HER room through the back door!
That accomplished, it was time for FOOD. No way was I cooking. Macaroni Grill. During which we drew all over the table paper and talked about "Once On This Island," this year's theater camp show.
Now we're home. And TIRED.
Night!
