My dishwasher has a china setting.
Sep. 21st, 2003 11:09 amThis is a Good Thing, because I used the good china for Charlotte's birthday party yesterday.
I made swan profiteroles, and used the dessert plates -- I have three sizes of plates in the service, and I think of them as dinner, luncheon, and dessert. I believe it was once service for sixteen, but it's a very broken set now -- six teacups left, for instance. My grandmother made up the lack with some very pretty Noritake cups and saucers, that don't match a bit, but eclectic china settings are fashionable, right? Since we had six guests, I gave Charlotte the mismatched teacup. Offered a choice of regular or peppermint tea, plus put out the crystal goblets for milk or juice for those who didn't want tea.
I drew a very creditable Eeyore for Tape the Tail on the Donkey, at which most of them cheated, which was OK, since I gave everyone lollipops anyway, and they played musical chairs, and then they mostly played outside.
We had a nice mix of guests -- three school friends, two next-door neighbors, and one summer camp friend. The summer camp friend, who lives in the suburban next town over, and whose family clearly has the most money of any of the group, had the worst manners. When everyone was playing outside, it looked like one of those cute self-consciously multi-ethnic advertising bits.
It's over. I don't have to do another birthday party for a year. And my house is MUCH cleaner because of it.
Hurray.
