This weekend, the kid had a slightly swollen and irritated eye.

Monday, went to the doctor. "Pinkeye," the doctor says, despite no pinkness in the eyeball, and prescribes sulfa drops.

By yesterday, kid has large rash surrounding eye, and rashy areas on other parts of face and neck. Quits applying drops.

Call kid in sick for school this morning (result: kid misses practice PSATs), get ANOTHER appointment. "Guess it wasn't pinkeye," the doctor says, and prescribes allergy drops, and OTC cortisone cream, and writes down "sulfa allergy" on the kid's chart.

Current theory is that the original swelling and irritation was... AN ALLERGY. Which, if they'd figured this out the FIRST time, we wouldn't have had to go through all this nonsense.

Head, meet desk.

That sucks. I don't know how difficult these two conditions are to delineate, but I have a nagging suspicion that a little more time would have helped. Doctors are so rushed these days. *sigh*

I am also allergic to sulfa (my only "official" allergy), so I am horrified to imagine what dropping them in my eyes would do, especially if I was already suffering from some other allergy. Hugs to the kiddo.

So my Sophomore had ACT-PLAN (so, pre-ACT) testing today here in Michigan. Next year this time, she'll have PSAT. Just find it weird my school and your school are running these same day!

Hope she's better soon. Here in Michigan, ACT's are super-important if you're staying in-state. They didn't even have a pre-ACT when I was in high school. I bombed the PSAT so bad, I didn't even take SATs. I scored really high on my ACTs though.

I'm going to to forward you something I got from a mom here in our high school about college planning and how the application process is killing them - and how to make it easier.

The ACTs aren't big here in New England. It's all the P/SATs. I didn't even know the ACTs existed until I was filling out college apps and there was a space for your ACT score.

When I was applying, I found the common app to be a godsend.

What's the common app?

http://www.commonapp.org/

It's a genero-app that a bunch of schools accept, so you only have to fill it out once for all the schools that take it.

On the upside, now you know about a potentially dangerous med allergy...

Hugs to you and the kid!

The doctor gave me drops for bacterial pinkeye earlier this year. After taking OVER a week to clear up, then recurring 2 weeks later, Google and I figured out I had *gasp* ALLERGY related pinkeye. Which can't be treated with drops.

Doctor's head, meet desk. Or fist. Your choice.
