Do you know what's not covered under a manufacturer's warranty?

MICE.

Apparently, the reason why my car was misfiring and behaving weirdly this weekend was that MICE had nested under the hood and chewed on the ignition wires. One bailout from my dad later, the car is fixed; one stop at the hardware store later, there's a stocking leg filled with mothballs taped into the engine compartment, which the guy at the dealership suggested to repel future mice.

Just for the record, the stocking leg was from a pair of purple and black striped tights that had developed a hole in the crotch. I felt okay sacrificing them because I have another pair of purple and black striped tights with no holes.

%$#@! MICE.

Joy. My sympathies.

On the Panglossian hand, without destructive mice, "Silent Night" would never have been written.

And then we wouldn't have "Silent Night/7 O'Clock News," and the world would be poorer.

I was raised Jewish. Silent Night itself doesn't do all that much for me.

The stupid, stupid mice-creatures have been coming inside, too. I will never eat chocolate jimmies again.

This is not the first time I've heard of this happening.

I was not the only one at the dealership today with the same problem!

So . . . you had to put mouse repellent in your crotchless tights?

Sounds like one of the call-in cases to Car Talk .

What I don't understand is if this is a common enough problem, why isn't it covered under the warranty?

The warranty is about whether the nice new parts on a nice new car ought to be expected to last for three years. Mice are not a manufacturer's problem!

Point. (Since I'm not a driver, I screw up that stuff sometimes.) I'm guessing the insurance company said "Sorry, we don't do mice"?

I didn't even think of that -- the insurance company tends to be about accidents, also, I hate the idea of making claims in case my rates go up.

Mice should not have triggered your "Check Engine" light, though; that's emissions-related.

I only know this because my own "Check Engine" light has been coming on for quite some time; the car needs a new oxygen sensor to the tune of $125. I'll get around to it one of these days.

My "check engine" light comes on steady if it's an oxygen sensor or other emissions problem, and flashes if the engine is misfiring. Nibbled wires led to misfiring, big surprise!

One of my co-workers at MPL had a husband who bought a big brand new, candy-apple red pickup truck. It was beautiful, it was big, it was RED.

Within six months squirrels decided to nest under the hood and chewed through all kinds of wiring.

Not covered by warranty.

A year later...

it happened again!

Sorry to hear about the stupid mouse-creatures. I hope the stocking with mothballs does the job and keeps them far away from now on.
