Today's set:

Max (min 7) (I did 12)

Does anyone know if you're supposed to stay in push-up position during the rest periods, or if you can get out of it? I've been going to kneeling. If you're supposed to stay in the start position, this exercise becomes a LOT harder.

I'm willing to bet rest means rest. If you can rest in the pushup position, that's rest. If you can't, then it's not rest.

The Army allows resting in a "rest position" which is essentially like the yoga stance "Downward Facing Dog", if you know that. Resting in a push-up position is known as "the Plank", and is a different exercise of core muscles. I can't do pushups because of my wrists, but I can do the plank.

Out. I agree that staying in plank pose is an isometric hold of other muscles too (largely ab & back), but it is also an isometric hold of pecs and thus is not rest.

The common rest after push ups is child's pose. Doing anything in between will make it harder. Up to you if you want to try that. One thing to consider: Forearm plank. It's easier on the wrists than regular plank, but actually harder than regular plank because of the angle your body is at. Lots of forearm plank, though, will make push ups easier.

You could also do a quick vinyasa in between each set. My recommendation: Start standing. Inhale, arms overhead. Exhale, forward bend. Inhale, look up. Exhale, step one foot back to lunge. Inhale, step other foot back to plank. Exhale, lower to floor and hold (chataranga). Inhale, up dog. Exhale, down dog. Inhale, back to plank, perform push up set. Complete set by lowering to floor, inhale up dog, exhale, down dog. Step feet forward between hands, rest as long as needed. Inhale, raise arms to sides and stand up, exhale forward bend and repeat set.

The vinyasa will rest you, but also keep you moving. Just a suggestion.

My guess is that if they didn't specify a specific position, it means it doesn't matter enough to them. I'd agree with mama_hogswatch, and just do what's comfy.

That is WAY too complicated for my limited exercise competence! I don't even know what you mean by child pose. I'm willing to follow the push-ups program and gothercise or walk on the off days. Adding yoga poses to the push-ups would be a surefire way to get me to quit doing them at ALL.

You forget. I HATE exercise. I'm doing the push-ups because I hate this blob on my belly just enough more.

Sorry hon... just making a suggestion if you WANTED more activity in between. Some folks do.

Child's pose (I meant to define). Stretch arms out over head and sit back on your knees/heels (bottom over heels) with your head down toward the floor. You can also place your arms at your sides, palms up, next to your calves. Over head arms is a nice way to stretch/rest after push ups. http://i.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/multimedia/archive/01080/health-graphics-20_1080535a.jpg
