My child, although she is two inches taller and five to ten pounds lighter than I am, is able to fit into most of my clothes, and wears my shoe size.

AND APPARENTLY LIKES MY CLOTHES.

Now, normally she does not bother with girl clothes, except maybe at conventions or for cosplay. But there are some occasions where she feels they're warranted. Like Seder with her grandparents (my ex-in-laws).

Do you want to know what she informed me she needed to borrow?

The black, just-above-the-knee A-line skirt she had borrowed at Arisia, my Morbid Threads black and grey striped long sleeve off the shoulder shirt with the lace trim and the grommeted shoulder straps (which may just be my favorite shirt), and my 20-eyelet Doc Martens, which she'd already wheedled the loan of last weekend!

...she looked really cute in all of that, dammit.

I do not know whether to be flattered that she likes my taste in clothing, or annoyed that she feels like my entire closet belongs to her on an as-needed basis.

I do know that she's going to be buying HER OWN 20-EYE DOCS with some of her yard care money this summer.

Sheesh.

WRONG!!

She buys the pair of Docs in the style that you like, but can't justify right now because you have your 20 eye Docs.
Remember, you wear her shoe size, right?

No, see, I feel like I'm pretty well SET for Docs right now, what with my plain black 10-eyes, my oxblood patent 8-eyes, and my 20-eyes. And there may be a plaid pair coming my way, if [livejournal.com profile] mhaille finds where she put them. If I told the kid to buy a pair of purple 14-eyes, I'd maybe borrow them once a month, and she'd still want to borrow my 20-eyes every week if not more. She's buying her own 20-eyes. I know what I'm doing.

Now, I may occasionally borrow the really cute dress she picked up at Connecticon. Fair's fair.

I went through a "menswear" phase in high school, and used to steal my dad's shirts, vests, ties, and jackets. He would get mad at me, saying that every item of clothing has a finite number of "wears" in it, and I was using up his "wears".

Some clothing has more "wears" than others -- one of her prize pieces for school is an olive-green wool half-lined sport coat that I wore all through high school, and that originally belonged to my father, and dates from before I was BORN.

I suspect you don't wear a man's 36. And we're not giving it up. Check your local Goodwill for a bigger one, though!

OMG I had a coat like that! I wore it all through the 80's. My sister and I called it the OPGC: the Obnoxious Pea Green Coat.

I wonder what ever happened to that. ;-/

As long as she gives my awesome clothes BACK. I've already forfeited a black turtleneck and a pair of army surplus BDUs.

Well, you know where she lives, right? You can always take them back. And take some of her stuff in the process. :D

I can't decide if I'm afraid I'm in for this in a few years from one or both of my own kids...or if I'm afraid I *won't* be. ;P

Depends. If you normally dress like a grown-up, you're probably safe. If, like me, you're terminally unwilling to look like a soccer mom, you might be in for trouble.

Little bit of both. :) The wife tries to keep me from crossing over into either full on "streetwalker" or total "frumpy mom wear"....mostly she succeeds. (I reserve the right to have at least three total streetwalker outfits and one or two frump/comfy outfits in my closet at any given time). ;)

I suspect I'm still safe....or should hope that I am. 0.0

Still, part of me thinks it very very cool that your daughter wants to borrow your clothing...you must be awesome. Or whatever the kids are saying now. ;P

She does!

It's the sock-borrowing that makes me craziest - because she never matches socks. So I get *two* pairs of my cute socks out of commission for however long it takes for Adam to get around to laundry. *grump*

OMG, yours doesn't match socks either? I have laid down the law about sock-borrowing because of that.

Have you heard of LittleMissMatched (http://www.littlemissmatched.com/?gclid=CIG4lbD_4KACFQk65QodFjMtCQ)? Deliberately mismatched but coordinating socks, sold in packs of 3. I brought her back a set from their store at Disney World.

Actually, I have a coupon code for a free pack with order, good through tomorrow, if you want! DWFREE.

I started raiding my mother's closet at about the same age as C--unfailingly seeking anything that could pass as preppy.

What's really interesting is that E is now beginning to glom on to a few of my things, though it'll be a few years before anything comes close to fitting her properly.

I've also noticed that given their druthers, E goes for clean-cut classic preppy-ish clothes while M is definitely interested in kicking it up a notch and mixing things up in funky bohemian mode.

Fun times await me.

It's interesting how they develop their own senses of style, isn't it?

If M evinces an interest in those fringed India cotton scarves with the glitter, I probably have some I could spare.

As long as she's raiding your closet, it means you don't have to buy outfits for her. So think if it as a way to save money. :)
