As seen on [livejournal.com profile] etumukutenyak's journal.

SUPPOSEDLY if you've seen over 85 films, you have no life. Mark the ones you've seen. There are 239 films on this list. Copy this list, post to your LJ and paste this as a note. Then, put +'s next to the films you've seen, add them up, and use your number as the header.

57. And there are a lot of movies on that list that I'm sure people will tell me I *should* see. *shrug* Some of them are Right Out (franchise horror and anything dudebro comedy), some are "invite me over, provide DVD and drinks, & we'll see how long I pay attention." Some are just "might have gone to see it if tickets weren't so damn expensive, but didn't feel like I was missing much."

Also, why are all the Star Wars movies on the list and none of the Star Trek ones? I don't get it.

Is there some method to the way these movies are grouped? I'm wracking my brains trying to figure out what Titanic has in common with Willard. Rats, maybe?

also noticed that age is not a factor. If 85 means I have no life, at my age, assuming I started remembering movies around age 10, I would only have to watch 1 movie every 4 months to see 85. How is that not having a life. Now, if I was 20 years younger perhaps the 85 number would be more relevant.

To that account, I could have watched all 239 films and still only seen 8 a year. With Cable, DVR, DVD and the big screen; that's really not that much.

20

Or maybe only 19 -- I never can remember if it was 16 Candles or Pretty in Pink that I saw. Also, if one of those is on the list, why not the other?

And yeah, curiously incomplete; I could probably come up with another 20 movies that I've seen that aren't on the list, and Star Trek would be half of them!

I agree -- it's hard to figure out what goes into the making of some list memes. Still, it's brainless and occasionally funny. ;-)

You might want to specify year of some of these films. For example, there's the original 1955 version and the Tom Cruise remake of "War of the Worlds"

I hit 40, but 19 of those are Harry Potter, LOTR, Indy, Star Wars. And I assumed, where it was a remake, that it was alright to have seen the original, or you can knock another six off my list.

I didn't create the list, I just c/p'd it. So I have no idea about the years they intended.

And I am so very not surprised at your 120, because you are to movies the way I am to rock concerts.

Man, I don't think of myself as an avid movie watcher by any means, and I've seen 103. To be fair, when I was a student I had a friend who worked at a radio station who gave me free tickets to a lot of movies - many of those ones that I would never have seen otherwise. But hey, free entertainment as a student is a win!

Sadly, the more feminist I've become, the fewer modern movies I'm interested in. I'll still watch older movies, mostly because I can give them a bit of a pass for the time they were made in. But most modern movies are so unwatchable for me:

- they all use the horrid jump-cutting that means average shot lengths are down in the two-second range - me, I like 2001, and The Andromeda Strain;

- by far the majority of people involved in making them would spit protectively after hearing the evil word "feminism";

- frankly, the comedies aren't funny, the horror movies are all dismemberment fantasies with minimal suspense and maximum gore (and squick me way past my limits), the drama is usually predicated on things I find old, stupid and pointless, like binary gender enforcement, man-child/woman-mommy, and jealousy.

This'd be why I've not seen anything on a major US or Canadian network in quite a long time, too. I'm about halfway to my life expectancy: I refuse to waste my time on things I'd only regret. :)

My standards aren't QUITE as strict, but I share a lot of your distaste for the standard Hollywood product.

Over the holidays, I saw Sherlock Holmes and Avatar. Slashy subtext and pretty costumes FTW in the first; the second was as reprehensible, plot-wise, as I'd been led to expect, but it was also visually oh-so-pretty. Unfortunately it also used the sort of camera work that gives me vertigo.

Before that, the last movie I'd bothered to see in the theater was the latest Harry Potter. More out of a desire to see all the movie adaptations for completeness than out of a belief that it would truly be GOOD. And there's never really enough Snape.

I've mostly been out of the habit of watching a lot of TV, but I've recently gotten hooked on two shows, Criminal Minds and Supernatural. While neither of them is perfect, they've both got a lot going for them, and it doesn't feel like they insult my intelligence the way that your average sitcom does. The characters may be flawed, but they're never just plain FOOLISH, which helps a lot.

84, I think? I've seen too many bad movies.

I was just doing a quick count, and trying to decide if "I watched it on TV" counts. Also, I object to them having Red Dragon and not Maneater. Not that I can remember which one was better..... Bummer on the Star Trek not being on there!

hmm. As I mentioned below, I've seen 55 of these, of which I saw 38 in a movie theater during its original release (first or second run). Being the same age, we might make a good test for this list. You see, the more films on this list that you've seen, the more likely it is that you've seen lots of other films that aren't on this list. 22 of those 38 came out in the last ten years, and I'd guess that those 22 represent fully half of the films that I've seen in that ten year period in the theater. (Why yes, I do have a ten year old daughter :) )

So, how many of the 85 did you see in the original theatrical release, how many of those in the last 10 years, and what portion of the movies you've seen lately does that represent?

I've seen 60 on that list. WRT War of the Worlds, I've seen both the awful Tom Cruise (2005) version, and the amazing George Pal (1953) version-- both on the big screen.
If, however, you count the number of times I've seen RHPS (100+) as individual movie experiences, then there's a large part of my early 20s where I had no life whatsoever. At one point, I was getting in two viewings a weekend.
But even if you count only the number of times I've seen a movie on the big screen, I've blown past 85 long ago. Do I strike you as one who needs a life? (I think just in terms of critics' screenings, I'm into the 20s right now.)

Also, FYI, the Brattle will be screening Casablanca on their big screen this coming Valentines Day weekend. If you've never seen Bogie and Bergie writ large, it's a real treat that you'll never forget.

Trinity College locally always plays it on the big screen around Valentine's Day too. It was sort of a tradition for me & my ex to see it then. I think the first time I saw it on the big screen, I immediately understood where the frame-for-frame homages in Raiders of the Lost Ark had happened!
