I called my journal "Noises From the Attic" to play off the idea of the crazy woman locked in the attic and muttering to herself. I hated Jane Eyre. Rochester's first wife got a bum deal. And Wide Sargasso Sea is a terrific work -- so very much after the spirit of a fanfic writer's desire to tell the stories that the original author neglected, and she got it published as pro fiction. YAY!

My subtitle is "the mutterings of a madwoman" just in case the attic reference wasn't clear enough, thanks. It's not really all that self-deprecating; we're all mad here, aren't we? You must have been mad, or else you wouldn't have come here.

My friends page is called "The Usual Suspects" for the not-very-original Casablanca reference, "Round up the usual suspects." It's how I've thought of any extended group of online acquaintances since the early '90s, when the no-discussion, announcements-only spinoff of the "elbows" mailing list was created with that title. I know I've got some erstwhile elboids in the mix.

And, just for the hell of it, my username is rikibeth because it's my name. I think I'm the only Rikibeth on the net.

Maybe I should make a more obscure alias?

Jane Eyre was my favorite book for years, but I haven't been able to read it again since seeing Wide Sargasso See. :-( It makes you look at the book completely differently.

Actually, speaking of madwomen and attics, I think of Germaine Greer and "seminal feminist texts" (are we allowed to use the word "seminal" in combination with "feminist"? ;-)).

Isn't there a list actually CALLED "suspects" from the Boston area that takes it's name from that line?

That's-a what I said, up there. I am a dinosaur; I remember the days when The-Usual-Suspects list was CREATED from the elbows list. I was there, I tell you.

I'm only tangentially connected, these days. But it's a connection nonetheless.
