Georgia Law Bans Retailers From Selling 'Pot Candy' To Minors

http://www.wsbtv.com/news/16186311/detail.html

ATLANTA -- Georgia retailers soon will be banned from selling candy flavored to taste like marijuana to children.

Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue signed a measure into law Wednesday that bans the sale of "marijuana flavored products" to minors -- anyone under 18 -- and calls for a fine of up to $500 for each offense.

The measure takes effect July 1st.

It targets businesses that sell the candies with drug-inspired names such as "Kronic Kandy" and "Pot Suckers."

The law says the candies promote drug use.

Senator Doug Stoner pushed the bill in the senate. "I don't think that folks are aware this is going on," Stoner told Channel 2 in April. "It's mainly, from what I can tell, particularly targeted to minority communities."

First of all: pot FLAVORED candy? People would WANT that? I was not under the impression that people consumed the stuff for the TASTE.

But second: Senator Doug STONER? You have got to be kidding me. I almost thought this had to be a joke, and that someone had planted the article. But [livejournal.com profile] eternaleponine Googled the Georgia state senate, and he's listed, all right.

Doug STONER?

Really?

The universe is obviously made of comedy gold.

I think I had pot candy once. It tasted pretty awful. I also had pot once. It also tasted pretty awful. Alcohol and alcoholic candy taste much better.

Little chocolate bottles filled with booze are AWESOME.

Yes, and best of all alcohol is worse for you over long term usage than pot and more addictive. Plus, it comes in pretty colors. Pot has nothing on Pucker or Midori as far as color is concerned. Although, this should probably not get back to Stoner. He will probably try to outlaw rum balls and kahlua ice cream for people under 21. Silly man.

I was helping my mother make the holiday rum balls when I was seven. I was allowed to eat them, too.

When I had my iritis back in December and they gave me drops to decrease intraocular pressure (because my eyeballs were seriously in danger of exploding), I asked the opthamologist about whether pot was useful in that circumstance, since I remembered reading about it and glaucoma. He said "oh, it works great, but it's got a very short half-life. You'd have to smoke 2-3 grams a day to get the same effect as these drops." I went, hmm, 1 ounce is 28 grams, a 1/4 oz is 7 grams, a 1/4 oz is a very large baggie, a very large baggie consumed over 2-3 days is both expensive and incapacitating, besides illegal, guess I stick with the eyedrops.

Did you read where mixed drinks made with fruit juice provided high levels of antioxidants? Oh yes, I'll have another pomegranate martini thing, sure!

Rum balls are yummy. Before I was legally allowed to buy alcohol I used to get alcohol candy because it tasted good.

I didn't here that, no. My summer drink of choice tends to be gin and tonic though.

I'm a fan of the classic margarita. I like the salt on the rim.

Margarita tastes good too. But I usually make gin and tonic at home and so I tend to have more of them. Which reminds me, since I will be in NYC during the summer I need to buy I super-big thing of cheep gin, tonic water, ice trays and limes.

I can drink G&Ts but it's the tonic water and lime making the gin bearable, not because I actually enjoy the gin.

Whereas the tequila flavor coming through the margarita reminds me of the seductive evil of David Bowie-as-Jareth's smile. Yum.

I can drink gin straight but the only type of gin that I like to drink straight is Bombay Sapphire which I have about one shot glass of, straight, about every six months. Generally, I just find gin and tonics very refreshing. I do like the suggestion of the gin flavor though. My Mum always complains that I put too much gin in my gin and tonic.

I have had home made margaritas but they just aren't as good as the ones I can get at bars. And bars are expensive. (Although there is a place near me that has a happy hour.)

Rose's lime juice. And Cuervo at the minimum. And while Triple Sec is traditional, I like Grand Marnier or Cointreau.

Actually, if you like them less sweet, fresh lime juice and Grand Marnier make it sufficently sweet.

On the rocks, salt... yum.

Wow! All the awesome flavour of pot without that annoying high!

As for Sen. Stoner, the first thing that popped into my head was the woman who complained about "suggestive" material available to children in a bookstore. The woman named Milfs, that is.

The funny thing about what you said is that the G&T was invented by British colonials in India to make quinine bearable to drink.

Most gin is awful. I prefer Bombay, especially Sapphire. (Even though there are a few better gins out there.) But even very fine gin can be ruined by bad tonic, and most bar tonic comes out of a gun shared with lowest-bid ginger ale, Red Bull, and who knows what else. Even in bottles, most tonic tastes like Pine-Sol. A typical G&T, even a T&T, is at best bearable. A truly fine gin with fresh Schweppes, however, can be a very pleasing drink.

Actually, I just remembered another pot-flavoured confection, one I used to make. Mmm nom nom nom nom

And then the pretty colours.

Good grief, that sounds like something that should've been in the news about a month and a week ago. ;-)

The universe is obviously made of comedy gold.

It's nice to know the universe has a sense of humour. Although I suppose the platypus was already proof of that. :-)

I'm a snob when it comes to tequila and margaritas. (Shocking, I'm sure, since I'm an oenophile from Texas. :) ) For me, tequila is crap unless it's 100% blue agave and aged. Jose Cuervo is crap. Even that 1800 stuff. Bleh. Most good tequilas are NOT golden in color, they are clear (labeled as "silver" or "anejo"). I don't remember what I have at home right now, but it was a good bottle I bought before a Mexican-themed dinner party. (It's probably the Sauza Anejo, and sometimes I buy the Don Pedro.) There's a good list of tequilas here that gives a good sense of the spectrum from the crappy stuff through the better varities like reposado and anejo.

And, yes, I use Cointreau. I do have some bar "lime juice mix", but that was mostly because I just couldn't handle the idea of dealing with enough fresh lime juice to margaritas for a dinner party of 8. I should get some fresh lime juice to make margaritas for myself, though. My post-work glass of wine last night was really nice, and reminded me that I could also do a post-work cocktail.

The Onion did a review of pot-flavored candy last week. I think they said it tasted like rubber tires...or was it dishsoap? I don't recall. But it was icky.
