Now that I have a brand-new hard drive, the current version of iTunes, AND an iPod, I am ripping all my CDs to the computer.

And putting most of them on the iPod, too.

This is going to take FOREVER.

I started doing that last January and I'm still not finished. I do have about 95% done though and I keep up ripping all current stuff as I get it. Even an 80GB iPod wouldn't hold all my music.

I am curious to see if the 60GB hard drive holds everything, as I have a five-foot-high, roughly two-foot-wide shelving unit that used to hold herbal tinctures and is EXACTLY the right size for jewel cases, and it's pretty much full.

Hah... yeah, [livejournal.com profile] a_h_scientist did this with our music collection and it took him forever. Fortunately, our MP3s are small, so it's not much work to get stuff on those. But right now, he's the only one with the whole music collection somewhere. I need to get it from his computer to mine so that I can benefit from his work.

G'luck!

it's worse than you might think, because I have these STACKS of sampler discs I've picked up free at festivals over the past couple of years, and they're in cardboard sleeves, so they fit together closer on my shelves!

Monumental but fun. I say, though I've never even considered trying to do it myself. My iPod is almost exclusively for downloaded music. That's why Arne bought it for me, because the piles of downloaded music CDs were getting out of hand. My iPod now holds 1800+ songs I've downloaded (the majority -- though no longer the vast majority -- even legally).

I was thinking of asking you yesterday, when you mentioned vinyl -- do you still listen to your vinyl? I still have a stack and even a record player, but the player isn't even hooked up anymore. It's kind of sad.

Once I'm done ripping the CDs, the nesxt project is to hook up all this lovely vintage stereo equipment and start ripping the vinyl. Damned if I'll re-buy all the stuff!

Except maybe my Les Miserables London cast album. (London is the One True Cast for me, because I saw pretty much all the original cast except for Patti Lupone in London in 1986, thus spoiling me for all other productions ever.) It has a small dent near the outer edge of one record, because a friend brought it back for me in his suitcase before it was available in the US. So having an un-dinged copy would be good.

Do you know how to go about doing that? I was seriously considering rebuying the Thompson Twins' "Here's to Future Days" yesterday. :)

I was just going to plug the "line out" or, failing that, a cable from the headphone jack, into the "line in" on my computer. If it's more complicated than that, I'll have to ask [livejournal.com profile] mcroft, who is both a Mac guru and a sound engineer.

I've done that! Boy did it take a while..but oh so worth it. Just think of the playlists you can make and the surprises you'll get in shuffle mode :-)
