Penguins and Punk
Sep. 19th, 2005 06:55 pmYes, I know, it's Talk Like A Pirate Day. So why is the rum gone?
I am now, indubitably, the mother of a "tween."
melovechocolate turned 10 on the 15th. We're still working on organizing a Six Flags expedition with a few of her friends, but yesterday was spent in mother-daughter birthday treats.
Namely, a matinee of March of the Penguins and a trip to Toad's Place for the Fat Wreck Tour.
garsha, IOU one night of babysitting, we had a GREAT time. I cannot think of a better way of encapsulating tweenhood than the contrast of those two events.
I'm probably the last person on my friendslist to see March of the Penguins, so you don't really need to hear me babble about it. All I can say is that whoever's manufacturing stuffie baby penguins has got to be cleaning UP, now.
Fat Wreck Tour was fantastic. The Soviettes, Smoke and Fire, the Epoxies, and Against Me! all on one bill. This was the opening date of the tour, and it's coming to all 50 states;
eumenides1, you and your daughter ought to check when it's coming near you, because I think you'd both like it, given that she liked Reel Big Fish and your comment was "punk is lovely, I like the mohawks better than the sideburns."
melovechocolate, predictably (because I had her listen to what I had of these bands on compilations), liked the Soviettes and the Epoxies better than the other two. And charmed the socks off of them, getting signed CDs, and got her head tousled by Roxy, sitting at the side of the stage during the Epoxies' set. The Soviettes are fairly classic girl-led punk, and the Epoxies are pretty much 1982 distilled and bottled; "Synthesized" sounds like nothing so much as "Kids In America." They have a lot of low-budget style, though -- fog machine so the laser pointers taped to the guitar and bass make beams, bubble machine, black and white striped outfits accented with red and liberally garnished with electrical tape, 3-D glasses on the keyboard player... yes, I liked them a lot too.
Smoke or Fire was solid straightforward punk, musically tight although the lead singer said he'd been sick earlier that day. The mosh pit that opened up wasn't too out of control.
melovechocolate didn't like them, so that was when she hung out at the merch tables and charmed all the Soviettes.
Against Me! was terrific. Much in the style of the Dropkick Murphys, except, well, no bagpipes. Just the basic four-piece combo, no frills, black jeans and black T-shirts, no fuss. I did not realize that they had such a big fan following... all the kids seemed to know all the words, and there was a ton of crowd surfing, and the band didn't care that the kids wanted to get up on stage with them -- the bouncers looked un-thrilled, because I think they'd been told NOT to chase the kids off stage too fast. Last two songs, about a third of the audience was up on stage with them.
Doors opened at 6, the show started not long after 7, we were out of there by 10:30, which meant she didn't even have trouble getting up for school today.
Go see this tour.
