Because without that little tin in my cupboard, the oatmeal scones would NOT have gotten made.

There's session today in New Britain. A session that will be sadly lacking one of its lead players -- Eddie Burke, a fine old Galway fiddler who's probably forgotten more tunes than I'll ever learn, has bone cancer, and is being sent home from the hospital for hospice care.

The session players are having a raffle to raise money for the family.

We can't afford to buy a lot of raffle tickets, but I wanted to do something, so I mentally reviewed the ingredients on hand in the house, and said "I'll bake a batch of oatmeal scones and they can put those in the raffle."

The mental review failed to disclose the fact that we're out of baking powder. I don't bake at HOME much, you see. Although I've promised to do a Linzertorte at home with Splenda in the nut dough and sugar-free raspberry jam so that Christy can have one. But anyway. No baking powder.

Plenty of baking soda, though. And that little tin of cream of tartar.

The handy table in the Joy of Cooking said that one teaspoon of baking powder could be substituted with 1/4 tsp baking soda and 5/8 tsp cream of tartar.. No, I don't keep that conversion in my head. I probably should.

So the scones are made, and rose just fine, and they're cooling on a rack right now.

I hope they tempt people into buying lots of raffle tickets.

I'm very sorry to hear. Eddie's a grand player. Pat Stratton was telling us about his condition at the Hamden session last night.

I hope the raffle went well; wish I'd not had a cold and stayed in the house all weekend, I might've tried skipping Hamden and Anna Liffey's to go up to New Britain Sunday.
