Never a dull moment
Jul. 26th, 2003 03:00 pmIt's amazing how a simple "Since I've got to go to CVS, I ought to stop at the grocery store, I've been craving Pringles -- want me to pick up anything for you?" turns into a $150.00 fridge-and-pantry-stocking run.
Really, it all made sense. The next step after "want me to pick up anything?" was "The list is on the fridge, it's pretty short." Then came "I've got coupons for some of the things on the list, let me get those." Then it was "whoops, look how many of these coupons expire on 7/31! Let's see if any of the short-dated ones are for things we could really use." Then a careful matching of the coupons against the store flyer, to see if we could do the "it's on special AND I have a coupon" trick, which we could for a couple of things we were almost out of (ketchup, pickles) and one luxury item (Klondike bars). Then "since this is turning into a large shopping anyway, we'll get some fresh fruit and the Italian sausage on special, too, and the loss-leader sodas."
This was all determined BEFORE we left the house, mind you.
My Coupon-Fu is strong. We knocked $50 off what would have been a $200 grocery run. I love it when they take competitors' triples.
Plus I get to feel all virtuous, because I remembered to bring our stash of plastic bags, and we didn't have to use a single new bag from the store.
Then, when we got home, it became critically necessary to clean out and reorganize the fridge, so there'd be ROOM for everything. So I did. Even the fruit and vegetable bins. Even spraying and wiping down the shelves. EVEN making room for the two-gallon iced-tea container with the spigot.
After all of that, I figured it was past time for a computer break.
I've still got to finish the porch this weekend, though.
Such an exciting life I lead...

Date: 2003-07-27 01:52 am (UTC)I do use them for cleaning the cat box, though.
My goal is to *run out* of them, so that I only have enough from a grocery run to handle the cat box for a week. I also want to run out of the paper sacks and switch to a twine baler for the newspaper recycling. However, I refuse to buy the baler until the paper sacks are gone.
