Inspired by a link on [livejournal.com profile] shadesong's journal, I just made my first attempt at Oatmeal Brulee.

Ingredients:

1/2 cup old-fashioned oats
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup milk
1/4 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp. (approximately) salted butter
pinch salt

Brown sugar
Blowtorch

Put oats and salt in microwave-safe bowl. Divide the butter into little bits and distribute it around. Pour in the liquids. Microwave 3 minutes. Sprinkle top with generous amount of brown sugar; torch until the sugar bubbles.

Results: For some reason, milk plus water made a soupier oatmeal than the same volume of water, which is my usual habit. The soupier oatmeal then added its moisture to the brown sugar, so the brulee didn;t get very crunchy. However, it tastes pretty awesome. I will try it again tomorrow morning with a reduced amount of liquid, and see what happens.

I don't believe that I'm allowed to have a personal blowtorch. I NEVER SET THAT MAN ON FIRE. I JUST WANTED TO REALLY REALLY BADLY.

But keep us posted on how it turns out, because I'm totally drooling right now.

If the bowl is oven safe as well as microwave safe, you could shove it under the broiler, I guess.

Still. Personal blowtorch. Can of butane about the size of a can of shaving cream, and a torch head with integral lighter. It is awesome.

If I'm allowed back in to Sur La Table, I'l linger near them and see if they call the cops. If not, I may have to purchase one just to have in my arsenal of Items Meant For One Thing But May Also Be Used For Home Security.

Hey, it means you won't have to waste a precious can of Aqua Net if you're caught in a zombie apocalypse!

I have vegetable oil in a can for that. Plus, bath bombs. Fizzy zombies ftw.

Wait, bath bombs fight zombies? I DID NOT KNOW THIS.

Well, "fight" is perhaps too strong a word. But it confuses them, causes them to smell WAY better, and makes them fizzy, which makes me laugh. Plus, if you use the right ones, you either get the added comedy of them smelling like bubble gum OR the aromatherapy from the night-time ones makes them even slower.

And, of course, they could wind up covered in glitter.

Or flower petals. Either way, win/win.

yeah, I didn't have any quinoa in the house, and I had to try it NOW, not soak-overnight, anyway.

Woe is me, it may take a few tries to perfect. heh.
