It was a problem with the exhaust system, but not the muffler.

It was the catalytic converter.

That's a $600 part.

How old is the car and how many miles do you have on your car? The catalytic converter is part of the emissions system and usually has a warranty that lasts longer than the rest of your car's warranty.
