Major accomplishment of the day: finishing a nightshirt for Christy, to replace the one that the paramedics cut off her back in September. Naturally, her favorite nightshirt.
The old one was short-sleeved jersey with a print of cartoon cats. The closest I could get in a nice soft jersey was cartoon dogs, but they were cute, and I got buttons shaped like dog-bones for the neckline. It ran up pretty easily. I got to use some fun stitches on my machine -- the overlock seam (it's not a serger, you have to trim the seam allowance yourself) and the honeycomb T-shirt hem stitch. Don't use them much -- don't sew a lot of jersey knit, after all.
One holdiay present off the list.
The other thing I did today was roast a ginormous turkey. Yes, I know, we just had Thanksgiving. But my mother-in-law kept the carcass for herself... and we like turkey, and it's silly to pass it up when it's 49 cents a pound.
I love the Cook's Illustrated "Roasting the Big One" instructions. The turkey package suggested 6-7 hours at 325. Cook's instructions were "1 hour breast down at 425, flip over, reduce heat to 325, 2 more hours or until 170-180 at thigh." Worked perfectly, and we ate at 7 PM, with the turkey going in the oven at 3-ish.
I'm recovered pretty well from my 11-hour days right before Thanksgiving. I churned out 5 dozen apple pies for the store. I can't tell yet if our Christmas rush is going to be as severe. I can't decide if I want it to be or not -- I like the paychecks from the busy days, but I don't want croissant tendinitis any worse than I already have it!
That's my fascinating life.
