Hartford, CT did not experience any dramatic blackout effects.

Our lights faded back-and forth for a few minutes, which I would have chalked up to our air conditioners. We had a purely momentary blip of loss; I knew it couldn't have been a circuit breaker, because those don't reset themselves, and I was pretty sure that I hadn't accidentally kicked the reboot button on the computer; I became certain of this when I went upstairs and discovered my alarm clock also blinking.

Had my parents not called from Maine to see whether we were OK, and to let us know how others in our family were faring, I would have had no clue about until the next morning when I heard the radio or checked web news again.

Sorry to disappoint anyone who wanted a dramatic story.

the only reason i knew anything was wrong on that side of the continent was because garon tried to call my mom (at her request, i might add -- *sigh* mothers) around 5:30 and the phone just rang rang rang rang...

he called me next to ask "how close to detroit is your family again?"

"about 45 minutes. why?"

who knew?

'course, i cannot help but see the irony in this. arizona has been panicked for months over the idea of losing power should the rolling brownouts in california go black. "conserve energy! blackouts are imminent! be afraid be afraid!"

then it happens -- elsewhere -- and what do we hear? a 2 minute blip on the 6:00 news, and that's it. fear could have been instilled. instead, they told us about a four-legged chick hatched in yuma.

*shrug*
