She can hold her balance well enough on the grass to ride until the ground resistance makes it too hard to pedal.

So she was confident enough to try it on asphalt, which is harder to fall on, but easier to push off on.

She can now push off by herself and stay riding for three houses' distance.

Next issue: STEERING.

Yay!
These moments are so fleeting. Isn't great you get to be part of them?

And by the way, thanks so much for sharing them with us.

Allthough I am decidedly ChildFree, I am not of the rabid crowd that would prefer kids be not seen and not heard. Kids are precious. They show us all we have forgotten, and they are the future.

She's a very entertaining kid, a lot of the time. She's also really, really ferret-shock bouncy, which can get tiring... but she is a good kid.

Yay!! There's something amazingly freeing about learning how to ride a bike -- suddenly you're a kid with wheels!

(of course, that does lead to the inevitable "and the parents can now send you on errands" downside, but eh, that's life)

My oldest was late learning to ride a bike as well. We first took off her training wheels when she was seven and our son was three. She had a steering glitch and ran straight into a fence, REALLY hard. Jacob was the one who was the first to react. He took off yelling, "Sandy, Sandy! Are you okay? Bad bike! Bad bike!" He actually kicked the bicycle because he was so angry that his sister was hurt. It was rather sweet.

Yay! If you guys are still at it next week when I get back, let me know and I might stop by and take some pictures (if you like).

Get her to be an expert for next summer and come up and go bikeriding down the bikepath with us! We go on weekend rides when we can in the summer along the hudson from downtown... and next year, now that Dani's moving at a decent speed, we're hoping to do picnic lunches.

Oh, and steering is *such* the trick... the first time Dani had the training wheels off she couldn't figure out turning. Hit the basketball pole once. And another little girl after that. And thank the gods she came home giggling about it!
