We moved the desk. We can do *anything.*
Sep. 10th, 2006 05:53 pmOne of my decluttering goals for the house was to move my antique armoire, the one I've had since I was twelve, the one that came and lived in my MIT dorm room with me, the one that lived in the dining room once my parents sold the house I grew up in, the one that
tyedboyne and
bunnygoth moved out to Libby's for me and
suburbfabulous and
krissydorn moved back again... anyway, when I moved back, the house was in a sufficient state of flux that the only place for it was in the living room, and I wanted it up in my bedroom, because in my head, that's really where it belongs.
Getting the computer desk out of my bedroom and into the newly cleaned office was part of that. (That picture of me in the last post? Took that in the office. Yay!) Getting the glass-fronted cabinet out of the room was also part of it, since it was in the space where the armoire had to go. I also needed to move a bookshelf from one side of the room to the other. And vacuum the spot against the wall where these things were going to go, because I certainly wasn't going to vacuum under there once the furniture was on top of it.
For that, I had to convince myself that it was OKAY to just vacuum that one little piece of floor, without being able to get at the whole floor, and the rest of the floor would be there to vacuum once I tidied up enough to see it, really, and I didn't have to wait until I could vacuum it all at once.
I did it. I pulled all the books off that bookshelf and made a horrible scary mess of them on the floor. I moved the bookshelf over into the corner. I put all the books back ON.
You have to imagine breaks for checking LJ in between every sentence, of course.
Then I went downstairs and pulled all the costume thingies out of the armoire (that's what I store in it. Everyone needs a random wedding dress and veil in the house for costume purposes, right?) and
eternaleponine and I took the armoire apart into its component sections -- pediment, mirrored door, body, and drawer base - and hauled it up the stairs into my bedroom.
I should point out that it's not a very heavy object, really. It's painted to look like tiger maple, which is a very impressive faux finish, but it's actually a very light pine. We could easily handle the weight. It was just maneuvering the bulk around the stairs that was the issue.
But we did it, and it's in my bedroom, all set up. I have a full-length MIRROR in my bedroom, yay! And a big empty drawer for my winter sweaters!
It has some issues with the door opening and closing, because the little screw plate that holds the bottom hinge pin on is a little loose, and the holes may need to be filled in with wood putty or something to give the screws something to grip.
But it's upstairs!
I still haven't brought the costume thingies up. They're draped over a chair in the living room, looking very messy.
That'll be next.

Date: 2006-09-10 10:54 pm (UTC)A trick I learned from a carpenter working on my house is to stick a small piece of wood into the (e.g., a match stick) with glue. Once the glue dries, you can try to put the screw back in.
